does this question have anything to do with y=mx+b? how do you figure this one out?

Not really (except for the fact that the derivative function in this particular example is the equation of a line).

The question asks us to find the slope of the graph at a certain point. On page 5 of the notes, we learned that the derivative of a function at a point (a, f(a)) is exactly the slope of the graph at that point! (Usually we say "slope of the tangent line" but "slope of the graph" means the same thing.) Thus, using the Theorem on page 8, you should be able to easily compute the derivative function (which gives the slope as a function of x ) and I'll let you figure out the rest from here.

this bulletin board doesn't really help. we need to see examples. instead we are being given clues. this isn't class this is a refresher.
i'm no farther ahead then i was before i started reading this.
